august thoughts

August, noun: the eight month of the year, the end of summer

August, adjective: dignified, stately

My least favorite month (an odd thought, but there it is), draws to a close.

August, grand serene.

A time of waiting for the harvest, a time of waiting for school to begin again.

A time to mourn the shortening days.

This August, the August of 2021: rain, fog, then dry, sere fields.

August maturity: the loss of spring’s eternal hope, summer’s carefree ease.

August maturity: the burden of responsibility, the burden of care.

And yet: August, the return of dew, the sweetness of the morning air. An August moonrise, the starry skies. A reminder of what is real, of what will last.
